Jessica Pegula vs Irina-Camelia Begu Prediction & Betting Tips - WTA French Open
by Steve Ashfield | in Tennis Predictions
Jessica Pegula may be seeded 11th at Roland Garros but that makes her the second highest seed left in the women's singles. The American takes on unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu in the last 16 with the winner up against top seed Iga Swiatek or Zheng Qinwen in the quarter finals. Pegula is enjoying her best run at Roland Garros and her previous best was a third round appearance last year. The American has only reached two Grand Slam quarter finals and both were in Australia, including this year. Pegula may be the 11th seed but only Swiatek and Jabeur have earned more ranking points than her this year. In the live rankings, Pegula is up to ninth which is a career high. Her best performance on clay this season has been getting to the final in Madrid, where she lost to Ons Jabeur. That form is being shown at Roland Garros with wins so far over Wang Qiang, Anhelina Kalinina (dropping the middle set) and 24th seed Tamara Zidansek.
Irina-Camelia Begu began this French Open ranked 63rd in the world but is up to 42nd in the live rankings. A win over Pegula would take her up to 30th place That's still below her career high ranking of 22nd achieved six years ago. The Romanian is in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for only the third time and she began playing in them 13 years ago. One of those fourth round appearances was at Roland Garros in 2016. This year has seen her play two clay court events prior to Roland Garros. The last 16 was reached in Charleston and after winning two qualifying matches, lost in the last 64 to Belinda Bencic in Madrid. Begu had problems in the first round of this tournament, having to come from behind to get past Jasmine Paolini. The second round saw Begu again in trouble after losing the first set on a tie-break to Ekaterina Alexandrova. It was easier in round three with a straight sets win over wild card Leolia Jeanjean who began this event ranked 227th. Begu has won both of her previous matches against Pegula, the most recent in January of this year. Pegula is the higher ranked and more consistent of the pair and can get the win here.
