Fourth seed Jessica Pegula begins her Berlin Ladies Open campaign in the second round and will play wildcard Donna Vekic. This will be a second career meeting between the two players. The winner in this game will next play Katerina Siniakova or Qinwen Zheng in the quarter-finals.

Jessica Pegula is seeking to get back to winning ways following her second-round loss in Hertogenbosch last time out. It was a disappointing result for the American who was the top seed at that WTA 250 event. 

She however comes here on the back of a strong season, having compiled a 15-7 record. A multiple WTA 1000 champion, the world number five has however not advanced to a final yet. She has suffered three semi-final losses and will hope things change in Berlin. Pegula defeated Vekic the only other time they squared off; two seasons ago at Wimbledon.

Donna Vekic is defending the over 300 points she earned here last season in her run to the final. Calendar year 2023 was an exciting debut campaign for the Croat.

She had a shaky start to this year’s edition however, as she was forced into a comeback by fellow wildcard Jule Niemeier. A one-time tour champion on grass, Vekic lost the first set 6-1 to Niemeier. She regrouped in the final two sets and allowed the German just four more games combined.

The win improved her record to 14-12. Vekic has recorded one semi-final run so far but has suffered most of her eight losses in the second round or lower. Despite advancing to this round, the 27-year-old has dropped 10 places in the live ranking to 49th.
