Jessica Pegula made her first appearance of the season in her opening-round tie here. The American did not look rusty as she saw off Maria Sakkari by the loss of five games in the second round.

Pegula debuted in Adelaide last season and produced a semi-final finish. She will hope to go all the way this season and secure the title in readiness for a strong showing at the Australian Open.

The world number seven has won all three matchups with Krueger.

Ashlyn Krueger is having a strong start to the season and has made it to the quarter-finals for the second time. Last year, the one-time tour champion failed to progress as far at a tour tournament.

Krueger, who lost in the qualifiers and is playing in the main draw as a lucky loser, has won six of eight matches. The American outlasted fifth seed Paula Badosa in a lengthy match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes.

Krueger has defeated two top 20 ranked players in Adelaide after seeing off Marta Kostyuk in the first round. Advancing to this round has bumped the 20-year-old to 51st in the live ranking.
