Top seed Jessica Pegula continues with her San Diego Open campaign and will play unseeded Anna Blinkova in the quarters. Jessica Pegula made a strong return to this event after two years away and was in dominant form in her tournament opener. The American, who has now compiled a 5-2 record this season, defeated the qualifier Jule Niemier 2-0. She gave up just four games in the win which marked her return to the tour after a disappointing Australian Open campaign. Pegula, a three times Melbourne quarterfinalist, was eliminated in the second round in Melbourne. The current world number five is up 2-0 on Blinkova having won both their previous meetings. The two matches were played last season with the most recent one being a 2-1 success in Beijing. Pegula is making her second appearance in this event, she made the semifinals in her debut back in 2022.

Anna Blinkova also produced a straight-sets victory to get past her second-round opponent. The Russian defeated Dayana Yastremska by the loss of eight games. This was her fifth win of the season and allowed her to tie her record at 5-5. She has now moved up six places to 45th in the live ranking. Blinkova is making her debut in this event and so far so good. The 25-year-old has registered four of her wins on hard courts. This is the first non-major event that she has gone past the second round. Before arriving here, Blinkova’s best result was a third-round finish in Melbourne. The winner of this quarterfinal clash will then play either Marta Kostyuk, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, or Wang Xinyu next.
