Top seed Jessica Pegula will take on world number 264 Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the Charleston Open. A third-round battle with either Dayana Yastremska or Magda Linette will await the winner here. Jessica Pegula is defending the over 180 points she won here last year in her run to the semifinals. The American has not had a dominant campaign and will hope things change as the season switches to clay. She has compiled a 9-5 record and four of her losses have come in her last nine outings. Pegula is coming off a quarterfinal run in Miami and has also made the semifinals in San Diego and Adelaide. The world number five defeated Anisimova in their only encounter to date which was four seasons ago in Cincinnati.

Amanda Anisimova has returned from a two-month-long break. This has done her a world of good going by her first-round performance. The American defeated Alize Cornet by the loss of just three games in her first match back. Before the match, she had previously taken to the court at the Australian Open where she lost in the fourth round. Anisimova has had huge breaks over the last year. She cited burnout when she took an indefinite break last April and missed the rest of the 2023 season. This absence saw her drop from being ranked inside the WTA top 25 to out of the top 300. She is currently ranked 237th in the live ranking thanks to a strong start to the year. The 22-year-old has managed to win five of the seven matches she has contested thus far. Anisimova made the semifinals in Charleston in 2022 which is the last time she took part in this event.
