World number four Jessica Pegula is 12th in the Live WTA Race. The 31-year-old (her birthday was last Monday) is attempting to reach her second final of the year. The other was in Adelaide in January.
Her last WTA Tour title win was last August but this weekend looks to be a good chance to win another trophy. It’s not been a difficult route to the last four for Pegula. The top seed has beaten unseeded Nuria Parrizas Dias and Anna Blinkova for the loss of just eight games.
Tomljanovic leads Pegula 2-1 in previous meetings but it’s 14 years since the Australian beat her. The most recent meeting saw Pegula win in last year’s United Cup.
It's been a struggle for consistency this year with Tomljanovic not reaching a quarter-final until this week. Wins have come in Texas against seventh seed Katie Volynets, Jodie Burrage and qualifier Ena Shibahara.
It was a marathon three-setter for Tomljanovic against the qualifier with a final set tie-break being won 10-8. Reaching this semi-final has taken the Australian to 93rd in the live rankings.
