Jenson Brooksby is a player to keep a very close eye on. The American takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last eight of the European Open. Brooksby celebrates his 21st birthday on October 26 and began this week ranked 70. That's a massive improvement on the ranking of 299th this time last year. The highlight of his year has been reaching the last 16 of the US Open and before that got to the semi-finals in Washington. This week has seen him again causing shocks after having to qualify for the main draw. The first round saw him beat fifth seeded Reilly Opelka and that was followed by victory over Botic van de Zandschulp and is now up to 63rd in the live rankings.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the world number 44 and the Spaniard has risen nine places in the rankings this year. The 22-year-old reached the last 16 at the Tokyo Olympics but then lost to Novak Djokovic. Form has been poor since then though. Before this tournament, he had won two out of eight matches. This week has gone better for him with wins over Jordan Thompson and third seeded Cristian Garin. This looks like being a close quarter final (the winner faces either Brandon Nakashima or Diego Schwartzmann) and the rapidly improving Brooksby can get the win.
