Defending champion Iga Swiatek is the only remaining seed left in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open. The second seed takes on unseeded Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-final. Can the Pole beat her opponent for the first time? Here's our match prediction.
Swiatek has won this title for the past three years but hasn't reached a WTA singles final since Roland Garros last year.
Amazingly, Swiatek has played Ostapenko on four previous occasions and has lost them all. Three of them were on outdoor hard courts (the most recent in 2023) and that's the surface for this match.
This week has seen Swiatek beat Maria Sakkari, Linda Noskova (after losing the first set) and fifth seed Elena Rybakina.
Jelena Ostapenko is up to 30th in the live rankings after beating Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. A win here will take her into the final of this tournament for the second time, the other appearance being in 2016.
Last year saw her win two WTA hard court titles but her form slumped in the second half of 2024. This is the first tournament in which she's won three consecutive matches since Wimbledon last July.
Before beating Jabeur, the 27-year-old had defeated Aoi Ito, 16th-seed Liudmila Samsonova and fourth-seeded Jasmine Paolini. We tip Swiatek to beat her in straight sets.
