No seeded players stand between Jelena Ostapenko and the St Petersburg Ladies' Trophy semi-final. The seventh seeded player faces Andrea Petkovic in the second round. The winner takes on one of the unseeded pair of Aliaksandra Sasnovich or Jaqueline Cristian in the last eight. Ostapenko began this week ranked 25th but is 23rd in the live rankings and can climb another place with a win here. The Latvian is in her third tournament of the year. Ostapenko began her year in Adelaide, losing in the first round to Paula Badosa. In the Australian Open, Ostapenko won two three-setters before another one in the last 32 saw her lose to Barbora Krejcikova after winning the first set. This week, her one match was a win over Wang Xinyu, losing just five games. Ostapenko has won the last two completed matches played against Petkovic. Their most recent meeting was in Moscow last year. It was one set all when Ostapenko retired.

Andrea Petkovic is ranked 65th but up to 57th in the live rankings. The 34-year-old was in the top 10 last decade but was as low as 130th last year. Petkovic began this year with a quarter final in Melbourne, losing to Naomi Osaka in straight sets. The German also faced Krejcikova in the Australian Open. Petkovic didn't fare was well as Ostapenko though and only won two games, all in the first set. This tournament has seen her beat qualifier Rebecca Peterson in the first round. The opening set went to a tie-break with Petkovic winning the second 6-2. This is tougher, go for Ostapenko to get the win.
