16th seeded Jelana Ostapenko takes on Allison Riske in the second round of the Canadian Open. The winner of this match will face either fourth seed Paula Badosa or unseeded Yulia Putintseva in the quarter finals. Ostapeko is the world number 16 but up a place in the live rankings. This is her first tournament since Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round. Ostapenko has won one tournament this year being successful in Dubai six months ago. Another final was reached at Eastbourne in June but she lost to Petra Kvitova. The first round of this tournament went well with a straight sets win over Anhelina Kalinina, losing just six games.

Allison Riske began this tournament ranked 35th in the world. She'll be looking for a good run this week as that may well get her in the top 32 and a seeding at the US Open. That's looking likely to happen as Riske is up to 30th in the live rankings after her first round three set win over Petra Kvitova. That was a big improvement on last week when beating beaten in the last 32 by Elizabeth Mandlik who was ranked 240th at the time. The American got to the final of a grass court tournament in Nottingham two months ago. Her next four tournaments saw her fail to get past the last 32. She's yet to beat Ostapenko with two losses, the most recent being in this year's Australian Open. Ostapenko can be backed to get a third win here, it might take three sets though.
