World number 69 Stan Wawrinka will take on 111th-ranked Jaume Munar in round two of the ATP Gstaad Open on Thursday. The winner of this match will face either Roberto Bautista Agut or Pedro Cachin in the next round. Wawrinka has continued to improve his world ranking, now inside the top 70, and he could gain another five spots with a win here. The Swiss is now 18-13 for the year and 7-6 on the clay. His first-round encounter against Roberto Carlos Baena took under an hour to decide as the Spaniard retired midway through the second set after losing the first. Wawrinka has not made it past the second round of an ATP event yet this year, but he will fancy his chances of changing that record in this one. 

Meanwhile, Munar has struggled to find the form he showed at the Madrid Masters back in April when he made it to the fourth round before losing to Daniel Altmaier. Since then, he has suffered first-round exits in Rome and at Roland Garros on surfaces that he favours. He decided to move to the Challenger circuit thereafter and found a little more joy, reaching back-to-back quarter-finals last month. Munar took on wildcard Alexander Ritschard in the last round and overcame him in straight sets to take his record to 17-20 for the year and 16-14 on the clay. If he can replicate that performance in this match, he will be in with a definite chance.
