Unseeded Jaume Munar will on Thursday face off with fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo in the Argentina Open second round. The winner will enter the quarterfinals to face either fourth seed Diego Schwartzman or the unseeded Bernabe Miralles. Cerundolo won the only other previous meeting between the two in three sets in Guayaquil back in 2020. World number 67 Munar has started the season in poor form with his only win coming in the first round here in Buenos Aires. He beat wildcard Guido Pella in straight sets to end a three-game losing skid. A win here can send the Spaniard back into the top 60.

It is the first time in the last three editions that Francisco Cerundolo has served off in Buenos Aires while seeded. In the previous two years, he started out in the qualifying rounds and in 2021 went all the way to the final. Last year he fell in the quarterfinals. Currently, in 30th place in the world rankings, Cerundolo has had an inconsistent start to the season and has lost four of his nine matches. He started the season by losing both his matches in the United Cup. He however followed that up by making his own piece of history by reaching the third round in a Grand Slam – the Australian Open. He was forced to retire in the second set in his quarterfinal matchup with Federico Coria in Cordoba before arriving in Buenos Aires where he has started with a win.
