Jasmine Paolini and fellow unseeded player Sorana Cirstea will battle in the semifinals of the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championship. Paolini is through to her first semifinal of the season. She has had a bit of luck in achieving this feat as Elena Rybakina pulled out of their scheduled quarterfinal tie. This is the furthest she has ever gone in a WTA 1000 tournament and is now one win away from a fifth tour final. The Italian has been in fine form in Dubai and has won two of her three matches here without dropping a set. She defeated Maria Sakkari by the loss of six games in her last match. Advancing to this round has propelled her up to 22nd in the live ranking, a new career high. Paolini has won both times she has squared off with Cirstea with their most recent encounter coming at the French Open last year.

Sorana Cirstea has also advanced to her first semifinal of the year. The Romanian defeated Marketa Vondrousova in three sets in the quarters. It was the second successive time in the tournament that she had come from a set down to win. Cirstea, who has won seven matches so far this season, has played two WTA semifinals before. She didn’t go past this round in Miami last year but did manage a runner-up finish in Toronto 11 years ago. Needing to also halt Paolini’s winning run over her is enough motivation for the 33-year-old. Cirstea has tied her career-high WTA ranking by advancing to the last four. She is now ranked 21st in the live ranking and can move up to 15th with a win here. The winner here will set up a showdown in the final with either Coco Gauff, Anna Kalinskaya, Iga Swiatek, or Qinwen Zheng.
