Fourth seed Elena Rybakina and the unseeded Jasmine Paolini are set to meet in the quarterfinals in Dubai. The winner will then square off with either Marketa Vondrousova or Sorana Cirstea for a place in the final. Jasmine Paolini is having her best-ever campaign in this WTA 1000 event. Before this season, she had never won a main draw match here but now has three wins under her belt. She has defeated two top 15 players in her run to this round and will be confident of another such victory. The Italian got the better of eighth seed Maria Sakkari last time out and won in straight sets. This was her seventh win in 12 outings this year and all seven have come on hard courts. Paolini defeated Rybakina on hard courts the last time they faced off. This was last year in Cincinnati.

Elena Rybakina was forced to retire in the second set of that Cincinnati duel with Paolini. She had taken the first set and possibly could be 2-0 up now against the Italian. The current world number four defeated Paolini in their first meeting. This was also last year but on clay in Rome, a tournament she would go ahead and win. The in-form Kazakh will hope for the same outcome and achieve the same trajectory here. Rybakina, who produced a runner-up finish here in 2020, has won 17 of the 20 matches she has played this year. No player has won as many matches on the tour this season. All 17 wins have come on hard courts and this has led to three finals and two titles. Rybakina defeated Magdalena Frech in the third round in three sets.
