Jasmine Paolini, unseeded, will seek her first win over sixth seed Caroline Garcia when they meet on Wednesday at the Zhengzhou Open. The two will battle in the second round with the winner next playing either Liudmilla Samsonova, Laura Siegemund, or Zhu Lin. Jasmine Paolini has lost all four meetings with Garcia with the latest coming earlier this year in Lyon. She will seek to put a halt to this one-sided affair and recent performances will have her confidant of a win. Paolini has won four of her last six matches. All four have come on hard courts with one of those being against a WTA top 20 player. The Italian is making her second appearance in Zhengzhou and defeated lucky loser Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets in her opener. The win allowed her to tie her record on hard courts at 14-14.

Caroline Garcia is also making her second appearance in Zhengzhou. The last time she was here, which was four seasons ago, she was not seeded and lost in the first round. Garcia was unable to make another title run in Beijing and was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The current world number 10 has seen her form improve in recent outings after a difficult run in August. She won seven of her last 10 matches and also made the semifinals in Guadalajara. Garcia is yet to win a title this year but has recorded two runner-up finishes. She has compiled a 39-24 record with 23 of her wins coming on hard courts.
