Anna Kalinskaya is also experiencing the best Grand Slam of her career. Before this season, the Russian had never advanced past the second round at a major. She had only four times won a main draw match and never had that occurred at the Australian Open. Now, she is only one win away from being among the best eight at this year’s major. Kalinskaya battled from a set down to defeat former Melbourne semifinalist Sloane Stephens in three sets. It was her second three-set match at the tournament which also saw a tiebreaker in the first set. Advancing to this round has propelled her a massive 23 places in the live ranking. She is now ranked 52nd and can move into the top 40 for the first time in her career if she wins here.
