Sonay Kartal takes on Jacqueline Cristian in round one of the Madrid Open. Whoever wins this match will face the recent Open de Rouen champion Elina Svitolina in round two. Here's our match prediction.

Cristian is ranked 65th and that's five places below her opponent in this outdoor clay court match. The Romanian has won 13 of her 21 matches played this year. Of those, all but two have been played on hard courts.

One hard court title has been won this year by the 26-year-old. Her one clay court tournament was in Rouen last week and she was beaten in the second round. Cristian has won five ITF clay court titles (most recently in 2023) but has never made it past round one at Roland Garros.

Sonay Kartal didn't play on clay last year. 2025 has seen her climbing the rankings and ten of her 17 matches have ended in victory. On clay, the Brit won both her matches in the Billie Jean King Cup but was then beaten in the first round in Rouen last week.
