Japan will take on Brazil in the two nations’ final Group B basketball match at the Paris Olympics on Friday. Both teams are seeking their first wins to keep alive their knockout aspirations. This will be the second time they battle at the Olympics stage and below is our prediction for the match.

Japan have struggled in defence and in their two matches allowed the most points in Group B. They have conceded over 90 points in each of the matches, with France managing 94 in Japan’s last outing. This match did however go to overtime with Japan putting up 90 points.

Thomas Wayne’s men will be looking to shore up in defence and maintain their offensive output against Brazil. Victory here will see them keep hopes alive for a place in the next round as one of the two third-placed teams. Yuki Kawamura scored a game-high 29 points against France while Rui Hchimura put up 24 points. Japan shot 41% from the field and 43% from three.

Brazil have won at least once in the group stages in their last 14 Olympic appearances. The three-time bronze medalists will be keen on maintaining that streak here, as their knockout chances also hinge on this match.

Aleksandar Petrovic’s men had a strong qualifying campaign and won three of four games. In Paris, however, they have found the going tough. They were defeated 78-66 in the first game by France and then 86-73 last time out by Germany.

Against Germany, Les Bleus shot 38% from three, an improvement of 5% from the game against France. Yago Dos Santos put up 18 points to lead the team while Vitor Benite added 17. Brazil defeated France in the two nations’ only previous encounter. This was in the group stages of the 1972 Games in Germany.
