World number 38 Jan-Lennard Struff takes on wild card Stan Wawrinka in round one of the China Open. The winner will face either top seed Jannik Sinner or unseeded Nicolas Jarry in round two. Here’s our match prediction.

Struff is playing his first match since the US Open. He lost in round one to Laslo Djere in a match that he led two sets to one. The German has lost his last two hard court matches and before that withdrew from the Paris Olympics due to injury.

He’s had a disappointing year on hard courts and is yet to win two successive matches in the main draw of an ATP Tour this year. His best results have come on clay and grass. He leads Wawrinka 1-0 in previous meetings with a three-set win on an indoor hard court.

That was played in the Paris Masters eight years ago. Two of the three sets went to a tie-break so a side bet on one here might pay dividends.

Stan Wawrinka is down at 233rd in the rankings. The former world number three (back in 2014) has been struggling for form with four of his last five matches being lost. His last tournament was the US Open in which he suffered a straight sets first round loss to Mattia Bellucci.

He’s yet to win a hard court match in 2024, though this is only the fourth tournament he’s played on this surface this year. We tip Jan-Lennard Struff to get the win.
