Jannik Sinner had a fantastic first three months of the year on hard courts. He's now playing well on clay and takes on unseeded Jan-Lennard Struff in round three of the Monte Carlo Masters. The second seed has won all but one of his 24 matches this year. He's won three titles and is top of the Live ATP Race. In the overall rankings, the Italian is down to third but if going deep in Monte Carlo, he can reclaim second spot from the absent Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner reached the semifinals here last year and the quarterfinals in 2022. After receiving a first round bye in this tournament, he beat unseeded Sebastian Korda for the loss of only three games.

Potentially seeded opponents in the last eight are Holger Rune (seventh) and Grigor Dimitrov (ninth). Jan-Lennard Struff  (28th in the live rankings) will be hoping he can get to his second successive quarterfinal in Monte Carlo. The German had a tough first round match here against Sebastian Baez. Only one game was won by Struff in the first set but he recovered to win the second on a tie-break and then the deciding one 6-2. It was a bit easier for him in round two as he beat Borna Coric in straight sets. There's been one previous meeting and that was in the recent hard court tournament at Indian Wells with Sinner winning in straight sets. This may be on clay but we go for a similar result on Thursday.
