Unseeded James Duckworth and Constant Lestienne will meet on Tuesday in the first round at the Hall of Fame Open. James Duckworth is preparing to play only his third match on grass this season. The Australian made his grass court debut at Wimbledon but was unable to get out of the qualifying rounds. He arrives for his fifth appearance at Newport after his second-round elimination at Bloomfield Hills. Duckworth recorded his best performance here last season when he made it through to the quarterfinals. He is having a rocky campaign thus far and has compiled a 24-17 record. This has resulted in him dropping down the ATP world rankings and starts the week ranked 129th.

Constant Lestienne is ranked higher up the ATP rankings than Duckworth but he too has dropped down to where he is ranked 86th. The Frenchman has struggled for form and has been on the receiving end more times than he has won. He has been defeated 17 times and has managed only nine victories. In his last match, he was defeated in straight sets by Liam Broady in the first round at Wimbledon. Lestienne is not a strong performer on grass and also has a losing record on the surface in his career. This season, he has lost five of the eight matches he has played on grass. Advancing from this tie will set up a second-round showdown with either fifth-seed Maxime Cressy or unseeded Alex Michelsen.
