The qualifier Jaime Faria will take on lucky loser David Jorda Sanchis in the first round of the Estoril Open. The winner will then play either Dominik Koepfer or Pablo Llamas Ruiz for a place in the quarterfinals. Jaime Sanchis is making his debut in Estoril and so far so good for the Portuguese athlete. He defeated a seeded player in both of his qualifying rounds. Seventh seed Mate Valkusz was defeated in straight sets in the first round. Third seed Lukas Klein would then fall in three in the qualifying competition. The two matches were the first of the season on clay for Faria who is having an excellent season. In 28 outings thus far, playing outside the tour, he has won 24 times leading to four ITF titles. Estoril is the 20-year-old’s first tour event of the season. He is now up 10 places to 254th in the live ranking which is a career-high placing.

David Jorda Sanchis is also making his Estoril debut. He will hope playing in the main draw of a tour event sparks a season turnaround. The Spaniard has struggled all season and at the moment he is on a losing record. Sanchis has lost 12 times in 21 outings. Four of his defeats have come in eight matches on clay with one of those being in the qualifying rounds here. The 29-year-old, who is continuing in the competition as a lucky loser, was defeated 2-0 by Pablo Llamas Ruiz. This was in his final qualifying fixture after he had battled through three sets in the first round. Sanchis has largely competed in the challenger circuit. He is currently up nine places in the live ranking to 320th.
