Jack Sock won this tournament last year but the highest seed he beat was number 17 as the top players were knocked out leaving the American to beat a wild card and a qualifer in the semi-finals and final. He's bidding to become the first player to retain this title since Novak Djokovic in 2014, the only player to retain this title since the tournament began 50 years ago. Sock is seeded 16th this year, the same position he had last year. He's had two straight set wins beating Richard Gasquet and then a lucky loser Malek Jaziri. Currently ranked 23rd in the world, Sock has been in poor form for most of the year and his last two tournaments have seen him lose to players ranked outside the top 100. This is his first quarter final since the US Indoor championships in April and hasn't beaten a top sixteen player all year.

He'll have to beat one to reach the semi-finals as Sock takes on Dominic Thiem who is seeded sixth for the Paris Masters. He's beaten Gilles Simon and 11th seed Borna Coric, who he had to come from a set behind to defeat. Thiem won the St Petersburg Open in September and before that reached the quarter finals at the US Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal on a fifth set tiebreak. Nadal also beat him in the French Open final this year. He won two tournaments earlier in the year. He's met his opponent on three previous occasions, all on this surface. Thiem won the first two but lost to Sock at the Paris Masters two years ago. Sock may love Paris but Thiem is in far better form and he can win this match to reach the last four.
