Fifth seed Sebastian Baez will begin his Adelaide International tournament by taking on the unseeded Jack Draper in the first round. The winner will then battle either Miomir Kecmanovic or Mackenzie McDonald next. Jack Draper was a semifinalist here last season in what was his debut. This and the form he is on will have him confident of another deep run. The Brit, who is making his season debut, has won eight of his last 10 matches. He concluded last season in fine form and made the final in three of his final five tournaments. He won one title and this was in Bergamo in the challenger circuit. One of Draper’s 34 victories last season was against Baez and came on clay in Monte-Carlo. He started the year ranked 61st in the ATP.

Sebastian Baez had a torrid close to last season and seems to have picked up from where he left off. The Argentine, who lost in the first round in Brisbane to begin the year, has now lost four matches in a row. He finished last season with three straight defeats and won just three of his final 10 fixtures. It was a disappointing way to end a season that had brought so much success. Baez won all three tour finals he contested in 2023. One of those triumphs came on hard court in Winston-Salem. This was the first time he had won a title outside of clay in his career. He will be hoping to get back to this form and avoid back-to-back defeats to start the campaign. 2023 also saw Baez ascend to his career-high world ranking of number 27. He is currently ranked 28th in the official ATP ranking.
