The end of August 2021 saw Jack Draper 272nd in the world rankings. A year on, he's up to 55th and in the top 40 in terms of points earned this year. He takes on world number 44 Emil Ruusuvouri in the first round of the US Open. The winner of this match will face either sixth seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime or qualifier Alexander Ritschard in the second round. Draper is only 20 years old but had wins over both Stefanos Tsitsipas and Gael Monfils when reaching the last eight at the Montreal Masters. Other highlights of the year include a semi-final in Eastbourne and winning four titles on the Challenger Tour. He also beat Taylor Fritz on grass at Queen's Club. His run in that tournament was ended by hs opponent in this match. This is his first time in the main draw of any Grand Slam apart from Wimbledon.

Emil Ruusuvouri is just below Draper when it comes to world ranking points eanred in 2021. He made a good start to the year with semi-finals in Melbourne and a final in Pune. Since then though he's only reached two quarter finals in Munich and on grass at Queen's. Recent form hasn't gone too well with last 32 defeats in both Montreal and Cincinnati. His success rate in Grand Slam events isn't good and he's never made it past the second round of one since first playing them in 2020.  A tight match is expected but it's Draper who can show what a great prospect he is and make the second round of the US Open.
