Second seed Daniil Medvedev begins his Italian Open campaign with a match against unseeded Jack Draper. The winner of this match will face either 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina or qualifier Hamad Medjedovic in round three of this outdoor clay court Masters tournament. Medvedev surprisingly won this tournament last year, the only clay court title of his career. Before his 2023 win, the Russian had never made it past the second round in Rome. He's played two clay court tournaments this year, reaching the last 16 in Monte Carlo and the quarter-finals in Madrid. Medvedev is fourth in the overall rankings but only Jannik Sinner has earned more ranking points than him this year. He'd stay in those positions even if retaining his title.

Jack Draper is 35th in the live rankings and  that's a new career-high. He's stil in with a chance of making it into the top 32 to ensure being seeded at future events. He had a tough first round draw against Borna Coric but won that in straight sets. It was tight in the first set with the Brit winning it 7-5 but he only dropped one game in the second. Draper has reached one clay court quarter-final this year, getting to that stage in the BMW Open in Munich. He's had some tough draws in other tournaments and twice been beaten by Hubert Hurkacz. This is his first time playing in the Italian Open so he has no points to defend here. He's up to 33rd in the ATP Live Race but we tip Medvedev to win this match.
