The opening weekend of the 2023 installment of the Six Nations will draw to a close on Sunday when France travels across the border to lock horns with Italy in their first match of the tournament at the Stadio Olimipico. The visitors managed to complete the Grand Slam last year and will want to start their title defense in style with a win off the bat in this match. France enjoyed their best-ever season in 2022, making a clean sweep of every opposition they came up against to record a perfect 10-match win streak, becoming the first-ever men's team to achieve that feat. Perhaps what makes this feat even more impressive is that Les Bleus had beaten every tier-one nation around, including the World Champions, South Africa, and an excellent 40-25 drubbing of the All Blacks. France will want to set a marker in their first match as they aim to become the only side to successfully defend their Grand Slam title.
Italy will want to put the last Six Nations tournament as far back in their memories as possible after finishing at the bottom of the table for a seventh consecutive year. After losing their first four matches, Italy extended their remarkably poor run in the Six Nations competition to a painful 36 consecutive matches without a win before finally breaking that unwanted record with a consolation win over Wales in their last match. Since then, Italy has looked much better, winning five of their following six tests, three of which came over tier-one nations. While they have made a notable improvement, they come up against the only side that has a better record than them since the last Six Nations and will have to play out of their skins to overcome them in this one.
