Italy travels to the Aviva Stadium to take on Ireland in this third round fixture in the Guinness Six Nations. The home team will be looking to bounce back with a resounding victory after their loss to France in the last match. Ireland are currently in third position with six points while Italy are last on the table and yet to record points. Ireland will be boosted by the return of skipper Johnny Sexton as he was sorely missed by them in the defeat to France. The shortened format of the competition ensures that the final standings could be very tight so point’s difference could play a major part in the end. Ireland will know anything other than a massive bonus point victory will be regarded as a failure. They are currently on the same number of points as second placed England but have an inferior point’s difference. This match should see the Irish throw caution to the wind and look for tries from the first whistle.
Italy will be hoping for an improved showing from their last match when they were whitewashed 33-0 by England. This defeat extended Italy’s losing run in the Six Nations to an incredible 34 matches. Their last win in this competition was in 2015 when they beat Scotland. Italy have only once beaten Ireland in the Six Nations and that was back in the 2013 season. Italy are under increased pressure to improve their performance with calls coming for them to be axed from the competitions. It remains to be seen if this can ignite the Italian team. The future for the Italians looks much brighter after their U20 side beat their English counterparts in the U20 Six Nations Championships.
