Top seed Iga Swiatek begins her Australian Open campaign by battling the unseeded Sofia Kenin in the first round. The winner will then set up a showdown with either Danielle Collins or Angelique Kerber. Iga Swiatek is a four-time major champion and is one of the favourites to emerge winner here. The Pole’s best result in Melbourne is a semifinal finish achieved in 2022. Last year, however, she again suffered a fourth-round elimination. Swiatek is having a dominant start to the season and has picked up from where she left off last year. She has won all five matches she has played in 2024 and this has stretched her current winning streak to 16 matches. The current world number one, defeated Kenin in the 2020 French Open final which is their only encounter to date.

Sofia Kenin is a former Australian Open champion. She won the title here in 2020 which remains to be her only triumph at a major. Since then she has never advanced past the second round and has in the last two seasons been eliminated in this very round. Kenin returned to the tour last year after a long injury lay-off and played 48 times though she struggled with her form. The same inconsistencies have cropped up this year and the American has won only one of her three fixtures. She was eliminated in the second round at the Hobart International in her last outing. The 25-year-old former world number four is now down two places in the live ranking to number 43.
