World number 1 Iga Swiatek will take on 55th-ranked Lucia Bronzetti in the semi-final of the 2023 Bad Homburg Open on Friday. The winner of this match will face either Emma Navarro, Katerina Siniakova or Liudmila Samsonova in the next round. The latter two’s match was suspended on Thursday due to darkness and will resume on Friday at one set each. By her own admission, the grass is not Swiatek’s favoured surface. However, you would have never been able to say so based on her performance this week. The Pole had a slight hiccup in the first round against Tatjana Maria, dropping the second set, but she clicked into gear thereafter and hasn’t looked back. With straight-set wins over Jil Teichmann and Anna Blinkova in the following rounds, Swiatek is now 38-6 for the season and 3-0 on the grass. It will take something very special to stop the world number one from securing back-to-back titles here. 

It’s been a fairly productive season for Bronzetti, as her final appearance in Rabat saw her improve her world ranking from 102nd to 65th. With her run here in Bad Homburg, she is now ranked 55th, and a win here would see her move into the top 50, which would also be her peak career ranking. The Italian has knocked over three higher-ranked players in this tournament in Julia Grabher, Maryar Sherif and Varvara Gracheva, only dropping one set to the Egyptian in round two. Her record now reads as 20-17 for the year and 3-0 on the grass, with this being her first-ever semi-final appearance on this surface.
