Top seed Iga Swiatek and the unseeded Karolina Pliskova will battle each other in the semifinals of the Qatar Open. The winner will then set up a championship showdown with either Elena Rybakina or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Iga Swiatek is seeking a third Doha title having triumphed here in the last two editions. If she ends up victorious once again, she will have become the first player to win three titles here. Swiatek has been in exceptional form once again in the WTA and has so far won 10 of the 11 matches she has played. The Pole is however yet to win a title this year and suffered a disappointing third-round exit in Melbourne. Swiatek, who has tightened her hold on top spot in the WTA, is yet to drop a set in Doha. She has won three matches and defeated former champion here Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-0 in the last round. The 22-year-old has defeated Pliskova in all three times they have been paired up against each other.

Karolina Pliskova won the title here in 2017. Coupling this pedigree and her stunning form at the moment, she will be confident of a win here. The Czech former world number one is currently on a nine-match winning streak. She arrived in Doha after her title triumph in Cluj and has carried on with this momentum. The 31-year-old, who has compiled a 10-3 record, defeated Naomi Osaka in straight sets in the quarterfinals. Her success in Doha has allowed her to move up three places to 34th in the live ranking. Pliskova’s win in Cluj was her 17th tour crown and ended a four-year wait for a tour title. The tournament also marked her first tour final appearance in three seasons. Pliskova suffered a humiliating loss to Swiatek in the final of the Italian Open three years ago. She lost in straight sets and failed to register a single game.
