Top seed Iga Swiatek and 14th seed Karolina Muchova meet again in 2023, on Thursday at the Canadian Open. The winner of this third-round tie will play either the qualifier Danielle Collins or the wildcard Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinals. Iga Swiatek is having yet another dominant season. She has compiled a 48-7 record and has won four of the six finals she has contested thus far. One of which was the French Open final where she defeated Muchova for her first win in this series. Swiatek is currently on a six-match winning streak after arriving in Montreal following her title triumph in Warsaw. She defeated Karolina Pliskova in her opener here in straight sets to earn her 22nd win in 26 outings on hard court. Swiatek will tighten her grip on the WTA world number one spot if she qualifies for the quarterfinals. Failure to do so will see her drop down to second if second seed Aryna Sabalenka emerges victorious in this WTA 1000 tournament.

Karolina Muchova had won the first two encounters with Swiatek before suffering defeat at the French Open. One of those matches was an exhibition match at the Czech Elite Cup in 2020. She will hope to dig her heels deep and add to her advantage in this fixture. The Czech number four has been in dominant form in what is her second appearance in this tournament. She is yet to lose a set and in the last round defeated Sorana Cirstea by the loss of nine games. This was her 28th win in 38 outings this season and the 18th on hard court. Muchova’s rise to the French Open final, the first Grand Slam final of her career, remains to be her highlight of the season. She is now up one place to 16th in the live ranking which is a career high for her.
