The third-round of the WTA 2023 US Open sees defending champion and top-seeded Iga Swiatek taking on unseeded Kaja Juvan. The winner of this matchup moves on to a round of 16 clash with either 20th-seed Jelena Ostapenko or Bernarda Pera. It’s been another successful year for 22-year-old phenom Iga Swiatek who holds the number one spot in the world WTA rankings. She was crowned champion of Roland Garros for a second consecutive year back in June and picked up additional tournament wins at Stuttgart and Montreal. The four-time Grand Slam winner will now seek back-to-back titles in Flushing Meadows after defeating Ons Jabeur last year. Her 2022 US Open win also represents her only Grand Slam victory on a surface other than clay. Swiatek comes into this matchup sporting a record of 57 wins and 10 losses on the calendar year. The Polish pro defeated both of her previous opponents in this competition in straight sets. 

Kaja Juvan has her work cut out for her here as she takes on the WTA’s hottest player. The oddsmakers have her at odds of nearly 20/1 to get the win over the defending champion and advance to the final 16. The 22-year-old has done superbly to reach this stage of the competition and can take confidence from a recent winning streak. Juvan battled through qualifiers and was able to overcome Cocciaretto and Lauren Davis in the first and second rounds, respectively. This puts the Slovenian on a five match winning streak which is sure to provide a boost in confidence ahead of this difficult duel. Making things even tougher for Juvan is that this is not her preferred playing surface. She is very much a clay specialist, with 125 of her 214 career wins coming on those types of courts.
