Top seed Iga Swiatek continues with her Doha title defence with a match against 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova next. The two will battle it out in the third round with the winner advancing to play either Jelena Ostapenko or Victoria Azarenka. Iga Swiatek is the two-time Qatar Open defending champion and is seeking to become the first player to win the tournament three times. The current world number one had a dominant start to this year’s event. She lost just two games in her second-round thrashing of Sorana Cirstea. This was her eighth win in nine outings so far in 2024. Swiatek is yet to win a Singles event this season. She suffered a disappointing third-round exit in Melbourne right before arriving in Doha. The Pole has defeated Alexandrova twice in three meetings.

Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Swiatek the first time they met. This was three seasons ago before the Pole’s astronomical rise to the top of the Women’s game. With the form she has started the season with, the Russian will fancy her chances of an upset. Alexandrova has also won eight matches this season in 12 outings and has registered five of her wins on hard courts. She defeated the qualifier Erika Andreeva in three sets in the last round. The win allowed her to advance to the third round here for the first time in what is her third main draw appearance. She has now moved up two places to 17th in the live ranking. Another win will see her equal her career-high world ranking.
