Top seed Iga Swiatek and world number 322 Daria Gavrilova will on Wednesday meet in the second-round at the US Open. Swiatek was in her dominant self again at the start of the tournament. The world number one defeated unseeded Rebecca Peterson in the first round by the loss of just one game. It took her just 58 minutes to deliver the victory and will hope to maintain this tempo in her title defense. Swiatek won the title here last season. This was her first Grand Slam win not on clay. The Pole has dominated again this season compiling a 54-9 record. The majority of those victories, 28, have been on hard court where she has lost just six times. Swiatek has won four titles so far with one being a third French Open crown. She defeated Gavrilova on hard court in Adelaide last season in their only encounter to date.

Daria Gavrilova has never advanced past the second round at Flushing Meadows. This is her seventh appearance in the main draw. But with how she has started the tournament, she will fancy her chances of causing an upset here. The Australian was in sublime form in round one against the wildcard Clervie Ngounoue, dropping just two games in the 2-0 win. Gavrilova is playing with a protected ranking as she eases back to the tour after a lengthy spell out with injury. She tore her ACL last September and returned this year with the Birmingham Classic. The absence saw the former world number 20 drop out of the top 300 places. She has however moved up 60 places in the live ranking to number 262. Gavrilova has played 14 matches in 2023 compiling an 8-6 record. Two of her wins have come on hard court where she has played four times.
