Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff go into this WTA Finals round-robin match with one win under their belts. Swiatek is hopeful that this week will see her regain the world number one spot ranking lost during the US Open. That's looking more likely atter current world number one Aryna Sabalenka lost a match in her round-robin group. Swiatek is the second seed in these Tour Finals and got her campaign off to a strong start with a win over Marketa Vondrousova. A tight first set was won by the Pole on a tie-break. It was far more straightforward in the second set with Swiatek not dropping a single game. The 22-year-old has won five singles titles this year, three of them on hard courts which is the surface being used for this tornament. Her most recent title won was the China Open and the semi-finals saw Swiatek beat Gauff in straight sets. The world number two has beaten Gauff in eight of their nine previous meetings and in three of four played this year.

The only time Coco Gauff has beaten Iga Swiatek was in Cincinnati this year. That's the only match in which the American teenager has won a set against Swiatek. Gauff had a good win in her first match in the WTA Finals, beating Ons Jabeur and losing just one game. It's going to be a tough week for her as the 19-year-old is the top seed in the doubles tournament playing with Jessica Pegula. Gauff has had a hugely successful year, particularly in the second half. The world number three has won four titles in 2023, three of them since August and all on hard courts. We can't get away from her record against Swiatek though and tip the Pole to win this match and secure her place in the semi-finals.
