Top seed Iga Swiatek and world number 36 Bianca Andreescu will on Monday battle it out in the third round of the Indian Wells Open. Iga Swiatek is the defending champion here and is the favourite to win it again after her superb start to the season. The Pole has won 13 of her 16 matches in 2023 and has made the final in her two previous tournaments, Doha and Dubai and won it all at the former without dropping a set in the entire tournament. Swiatek received a bye in the first round and started her tournament against the unseeded Claire Liu and won easily, allowing the American just one game in the match that lasted slightly over an hour. Such dominance has characterized Swiatek’s season where all her wins have come by straight sets. She has a strong hold on top spot in the world ranking, leading by more than 3000 points and will want to keep it that way with her closest challengers still active in California.

Bianca Andreescu had been on a three-match losing run but halted that with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the wildcard Peyton Sterns in the second round. She served off here ranked 36th in the world but has since moved up to 31st place. Her highlight of the season thus far has been making the semifinals in Hua Hin where a shoulder injury forced her to retire in the second set against Lesia Tsurenko. She looks to have recovered fully from that and will seek to prolong her stay in California for at least another round. Swiatek won the only other meeting between the two 2-0 at the Italian Open in 2022. The winner here will advance to the fourth round to take on either 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or the unseeded Emma Raducanu.
