Iga Swiatek regained her position at the top of the world rankings after winning the WTA Tour Finals. Now she hopes to help Poland win the United Cup and begins with a match against Beatriz Haddad Maia.. This is a Group A tie between Poland and Brazil with the other side to play being Spain. This women's singles match will be followed by Hubert Hurkacz taking on Thiago Seyboth-Wild with Hurkacz the strong favorite to win that for Poland. A win for Swiatek over Mahia would therefore get them off to a strong start in this best-of-three tie. Swiatek won six titles in the 2023 season but at one stage was replaced at the top of the rankings by Aryna Sabalenka. Her last 11 matches of the season were all won giving her the China Open and then the WTA Tour Finals with just one set being lost.

Maia is ranked 11th in the world but was as high as tenth earlier in the year. The Brazilian hasn't played since the end of October when winning the Elite Trophy. That was the only final that Maia has reached in 2023 with a win over Zheng Qinwen securing the title. The Brazilian is 1-1 in previous meetings with Swiatek but lost to her in this year's French Open. The other saw Maia win in Toronto in 2022 on a hard court and that's the surface this match is being played on. Swiatek looks relaxed after such an impressive end to the 2023 season and we back her to win this in straight sets.
