Top seed Iga Swiatek and world number 331 Angelique Kerber will battle in the fourth round at the Italian Open. The winner of this third career meeting between the two will play Madison Keys or Sorana Cirstea in the quarter-finals. Iga Swiatek eliminated Yulia Putintseva in straight sets in the third round. It was her second successive 2-0 win having defeated the qualifier Bernarda Pera by the loss of two games in round two. Swiatek, a two-time Rome champion, lost in the quarter-finals at last year’s edition. She was gunning for a third successive crown in this WTA 1000 tournament. The world number one has won both times she has squared off with Kerber. She defeated the German earlier this year at the United Cup in Australia. Swiatek has won 34 times in 38 fixtures this season and is on an eight-match winning run. She arrived in Rome having won the Madrid Open.

Angelique Kerber is back in Rome after missing out last year. The German missed the entire 2023 campaign on maternity leave and has battled with her fitness this year. This has disrupted her form, seeing her lose more than she has won. Kerber has compiled a 7-9 record. She defeated the qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets in the third round. The win allowed her to advance to the fourth round for the first time since making the last eight in 2018. A four-time Grand Slam champion, Kerber dropped out of the WTA top 600 due to her inactivity last season. She has however gradually moved up the world rankings this year. Advancing to this round has propelled her a massive 97 places to 234th in the live ranking.
