Group C of the Men's European Handball Championships begins with Serbia taking on Iceland. The other two countries in this group are Hungary and Montenegro who play each other later on Friday evening. The top two in this group go into the main round with points earned against the fellow qualifier being carried forward. Iceland finished sixth in the 2022 European Championships and their best performance is a third placed finish in 2010. At last year's World Championships, the Icelandic team won four of their six games, being knocked out in the main round and finishing in 12th place. Iceland come into this tournament in good form and are expected to comfortably progress to the main round. They have won their last seven matches since being beaten by the Czech Republic last March.

Serbia were runners-up in this tournament 12 years ago but haven't reached anywhere near those levels since then. Four of the last five European Championships have seen them fail to make it out of this preliminary round. Their last time in the main round was in 2018. In the two championships held since then, Serbia have won one and lost five. They did get to the main round of the 2023 World Championships with four of their six matches won. The Serbs arrive in poor form with their last two friendlies being lost against Poland and Spain. They have only one win over Slovakia in their last five internationals.
