Match 37 of 48 in the 2023 Cricket World Cup will see India taking on South Africa on Sunday. This match will be played at the iconic Eden Gardens between the sides ranked first and second, respectively. India have already qualified for the semi-finals and are the only side in the competition that have a 100% winning record. They have already taken down the likes of Australia and Pakistan, while their most recent victory came over Sri Lanka. Against the Lions, the Men in Blue set a target of 357/8 but bowled their opponents out for a meagre 55 runs in less than 20 overs. Mohammed Shami was the standout player in the match, taking 5/18. He is now ranked sixth in the leading wicket-takers standings, just one spot behind Jasprit Bumrah. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the key contributors with the bat, and both are inside the top 10 run-scorers in the competition. India knocked South Africa out of the 2015 CWC, but can they stop the rampant Proteas batting lineup in this one? 

Meanwhile, very few had given South Africa a chance of going deep in this competition after a mixed warm-up campaign. However, the Proteas have come good here in India and are in second place. In their seven matches, they suffered only one defeat, though that was arguably the biggest upset of the competition against a plucky Netherlands team. Since then, though, the Proteas have been excellent, beating England, Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. As mentioned, South Africa’s biggest strength has been their batting, with Quinton de Kock leading the charge from the front. The opener leads the way in the leading run-scorer standings with 545 in seven innings. Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen are also in the top ten rankings. Many are making this out to be a prelude to the final, and the Proteas would love nothing more than to gain the psychological edge heading into the knockout rounds.
