Taylor Fritz bids to reach the last eight of the Madrid Masters for the first time. The 12th seed takes on Hubert Hurkacz who is seeded eighth. For the winner, there's a quarter-final against either fourth seed Alexander Zverev or the 21st seeded Francisco Cerundolo. Fritz is 13th in both the overall and live rankings. He's a couple of places lower in the Live ATP Race but has been in good form on clay this year. The American got to the final of the BMW Open where he lost to Jan-Lennard Struff. He got to the fourth round here last year and has again reached that stage of this outdoor clay court tournament. Wins have come against Luciano Darderi and in the last round, the 18th seeded Sebastian Baez. He leads Hurkacz 2-1 in previous meetings but this is their first match on clay.

Hubert Hurkacz has won a clay court tournament this year. He won the Estoril title and that was his first ATP Tour win on this surface, though he has won two on lower tours. Since winning in Portugal, he's reached the last 16 in Monte Carlo and has again got that far in this tournament. The Pole is a former semi-finalist in Madrid, getting that far in 2022. Last year saw him lose in the first round but the world number nine has done much better this time around. He's had wins over Jack Draper and Daniel Altmaier, both in straight sets. This looks like being a close match and we go for Hurkacz to get the win..
