France face Hungary in their final match in Group B of the men's Olympic handball tournament. Both countries are yet to confirm their place in the quarter-finals. France simply needs to avoid defeat in this match to qualify. Read on for our prediction.
The French side have had a tough time in this group. That wasn't expected as they are the reigning Olympic and European champions and of course the host nation. They began this group with a loss to Denmark and their problems increased when being beaten by Norway.
Since then, they have drawn with Egypt and on Friday had a vital win over bottom-of-the-group Argentina by a seven-goal margin. That has taken them to fourth (the final qualifying place) and a point ahead of their opponents Hungary.
The two sides met earlier this year in the European Championships with France winning by a three-goal margin. Hungary will want to reverse that result as only a win will take them into the quarter-finals. Winning this match could take them as high as third in this group.
They are making their return to the Olympics after missing the last two. Like their opponents, their only win so far has come over Argentina. Another win against Norway looked possible on Wednesday when leading by two goals but eventually losing by one.
Friday saw their qualification hopes take another hit as they lost by three goals to Denmark. That was their fourth loss in the last five played. It's going to be tough against the hosts and we tip France to win this match on a -3.5 goals handicap.
