Hubert Hurkacz, 16th seed, and unseeded Zhang Zhizhen meet again in Shanghai on Tuesday to square off in the fourth round. The winner will then proceed to play either eighth-seed Casper Ruud or unseeded Fabian Marozsan in the quarterfinals. Hurkacz defeated Zhizhen 2-0 in their only meeting, which was in the first round here four seasons ago. He will seek a similar outcome to advance to his sixth quarterfinal of the season. Hurkacz has won 35 of 55 matches this year with 19 of those coming after 29 outings on hard courts. He is yet to drop a set in his third appearance in Shanghai. The world number 17 defeated the qualifier Hsu Yu-hsiou by the loss of eight games in the last round.

Zhang Zhizhen has had a rocky season but in recent outings has looked much more stable. The Chinese number one has won five of his last six matches. He will hope this spike in form propels him past Hurkacz and into his fifth quarterfinal of the season. Zhizhen moved up three places in the live ranking thanks to his straight-sets win over Brandon Nakashima in the previous round. He surrendered eight games in the contest and is now up to 57th which is five places below his career-high world ranking. Before arriving here, the 26-year-old had lost more matches than he had won across all surfaces and also on hard courts. He has now boosted his record for the season to 29-27 and has won 11 of 22 matches on hard courts.
