Top seed Hubert Hurkacz will on Thursday take on world number 133 Leandro Reidi in his first match of the 2023 Open 13 in Marseille. Hurkacz has dropped out of the world’s top 10 and serves off at his fourth tournament of the year ranked 11th in the live ranking. He arrives in Marseille after being eliminated from the Rotterdam Open in the second round. The straight-sets loss to eventual semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov was the Polish number one’s fourth of the season. He started his year with the inaugural United Cup where he lost two of his four matches. Hurkacz’s highlight of the year thus far has been his performance at the Australian Open where he advanced to the fourth round for the first time at the major and the second time in his Grand Slam career. Seeded 10th in Melbourne Hurkacz played to five sets in his final three matches after starting his tournament with a straight-sets win over Pedro Martinez. He came back from losing the first set against Lorenzo Sonego in the second round and relinquished a two-set lead in the third round against Denis Shapovalov. In the fourth round, the 26-year-old again relinquished an early lead but after mounting a comeback, was unable to secure the win and lost to Sebastian Korda.
Leandro Riedi is making his debut in Marseille and defeated the unseeded Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets in the first round to earn his first-ever ATP tour win. Riedi made his top-level debut in 2021. The Swiss national started his season by making the final of the Canberra Challenger where he lost in straight sets to world number 78 Marton Fucsovics. His rise to the final saw a huge leap in the world rankings allowing him to make his top 150 debut with his 135th-place ranking. He participated in the Australian Open but was unable to get out of the qualifying rounds. This second-round match, to be played on an indoor hard court, will be the first-ever meeting between these two players.
