Hubert Hurkacz will play unseeded Christopher O’Connell on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open. In his second round match against qualifier Yosuke Watanuki, fourth seed Hurkacz looked out of sorts. He lost the opening set and was forced to seven games in each of the other two sets, playing 36 games in total. He will hope to be more assertive against O’Connell. The Pole has now won 20 of the 12 matches he has played this season and has one title win, which was in Marseille in February. He is currently ranked 17th in the live ranking, a drop of three places after losing 455 ranking points.

O’Connell is up seven places to a new career-high ranking of number 67 in the live ranking. This is all thanks to his superb start in Stuttgart where he is yet to drop a set in two matches played. He defeated Daniel Altmaier in the first round by the loss of just four games. His battle with Lorenzo Sonego in the second round was less straightforward as he won 7-6, 6-3. The Australian has so far compiled a record of 21 wins and 19 losses. His highlight of the campaign so far came in Munich where he made it through to the semifinals. The winner of this match will play either Jan-Lennard Struff or Richard Gasquet in the semifinals.
