12th seeded Hubert Hurkacz is bidding to repeat the success he had at the 2022 Madrid Masters. He reached the quarter finals last year and takes on 17th seeded Borna Coric in the third round of this 2023 edition. The winner of this match will face either sixth seeded Holger Rune or Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina who's the 29th seed. Hurkacz began this tournament ranked 15th in the world and remains in that position in the live rankings. Beating Coric will take him above the injured Rafael Nadal into 14th place. In the ATP Live Race, Hurkacz is in 14th place. 2023 has seen the Polish player win the ATP hard court tournament held in Marseille in February. He's only reached one quarter-final since then and two clay court tournaments have both seen him lose in the last 16. He had to go to three sets to get past Richard Gasquet in his first match of this clay court tournament. The first set was lost on a tie-break but he won the next two 6-4 7-5.

Borna Coric leads his opponent 2-1 in previous meetings. One of those has been on an outdoor clay court and that was at Monte Carlo four years ago with Coric winning in three sets. The Argentinian was ranked 20th at the start of this tournament and is up a place in the live rankings. He can move up to 18th if winning this match. It's not been a great year for him though and he was 96th in the Live ATP Race before the start of this event. He's up to 80th now. Coric got to the last eight in both Marseille and Dubai but three of the tournaments that followed saw him lose in the last 64. On clay this season he lost his first two matches this year before getting a win over Hugo Gaston in his first match in this tournament. Hurkacz is a tough player to beat and can get the win here.
