Houston Astros vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction & Betting Tips - MLB
by Joseph King | in Baseball Predictions
The Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies contest the 118th edition of the MLB World Series when the two sides meet at Minute Maid Park in Houston for game one of this best of seven matchup. This is the Astros’ fourth trip to the World Series in the past six seasons and second consecutive as they look to right the wrongs from last year which saw them fall 4-2 to the Braves at the final hurdle. Houston were crowned champions in 2017 when they overcame the Dodgers in seven games but are 0-2 in the World Series since then, finishing as runners up in 2019 and 2021. For the Phillies, their fanbase will be thrilled just to have made it to this point after sneaking into the playoffs as a Wild Card team. This is the Phillies first postseason appearance in 10 years and first World Series appearance since 2008, when they defeated the Rays 4-1.

Houston Astros - Philadelphia Phillies: Form Analysis
The Astros come into this World Series matchup as one of baseball’s most consistent teams in the 2022 season. Houston were dominant in the regular season, recording an AL best 106-56 record while going 55-26 at Minute Maid Park. They’ve also been cruising in the playoffs up to this point and have yet to lose a game. The ‘Stros swept the Mariners 3-0 in the first round before following up with an emphatic 4-0 sweep of the Yankees. On the other side, Philly qualified for the postseason as the final Wild Card spot with an 87-75 record. Their dream run started with them dumping out the defending champion Braves 2-1 in the first round before overcoming the Padres 4-1 in the NLCS.

Houston Astros & Philadelphia Phillies Squad Analysis
Taking the mound for the betting favorites is Justin Verlander. The Astros ace had a phenomenal regular season at the ripe age of 37, posting an 18-4 record with a ridiculous 1.75 ERA through his 28 starts. Verlander did not enjoy a good start to the postseason, giving up six earned runs in four innings pitched with only three strikeouts against the Mariners. The big righty was able to bounce back, however, going six innings with only one earned run and 11 strikeouts against New York. He will face off against the Phillies’ Aaron Nola, who went 11-13 in the regular season while posting a 3.25 ERA through 32 starts. Nola struggled in his most recent outing, giving up six earned runs after pitching nearly 13 innings of shutout postseason baseball prior.
Houston Astros - Philadelphia Phillies Key Points
- Astros’ starter Justin Verlander has given up at least one home run in seven consecutive postseason starts, totaling 10 in his last 38 innings of playoff baseball.
- Phillies starter Aaron Nola is 2-1 in the postseason with a 3.14 ERA compared to Verlander who is 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA.
- Philadelphia has a lot of power in their lineup which could cause Verlander problems, who has struggled with the long ball in the postseason. The Phillies ranked sixth in the regular season in isolated power.

Our Houston Astros vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
We’re going to back the Phillies on the +0.5 runline for the first five innings of play. This means that Philadelphia will have to be either leading or tied by the time the fifth inning ends. This is simply too good of a spot to pass up on getting the half run for the first half of the first championship game. The Astros haven’t been challenged up to this point but are coming up against a red hot Phillies team that is playing with a ton of confidence. The underdogs come into this game with hot bats and have put up 18 runs in their last three games. There is certainly a chance they get to Verlander here despite how good the hall-of-famer has been this year.
