Top seed Holger Rune will begin his Hangzhou Open campaign with a second-round battle against qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama. Let’s look at the stats for this Saturday match and a prediction.

Rune has returned to competitive action after a three-week break. The Dane was last on the court at the US Open where he suffered a disappointing first-round loss.

He will seek to put that behind him by producing a title run in this event. Rune has compiled a 33-18 record thus far in 2024 and has registered most of his wins, 16, on hard courts.

Though still seeking his first title, the 21-year-old came close in Brisbane, finishing as runner-up. He was also a semi-finalist in Montpellier, Acapulco, Cincinnati, and Munich. The former world number four is currently placed 14th in the ATP.

Yasutaka Uchiyama defeated lucky loser James McCabe in the first round. His first tour-level main draw win this season came in straight sets. The Japanese number four has now won his last three matches in straight sets and will feel confident of causing an upset here.

Uchiyama, who has predominantly featured in the challenger circuit, has compiled a 28-16 record. He has won two titles, both on hard courts, and made it to the semi-finals in three other challenger events.

The 32-year-old is an excellent hard-court player and has claimed 24 of his victories this year on the surface. Hard courts have also seen most of his defeats. Making it to the second round has moved him up 16 places and into 144th in the live ranking.

The winner here will play Marin Cilic or Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarter-finals
