Top seed Holger Rune and the unseeded Max Purcell will battle each other in the first round of the Brisbane International championship. The winner will then advance to play either Luca Van Assche or Alexander Shevchenko for a place in the quarterfinals. Holger Rune had an excellent 2023 campaign and he will be looking to build on this for 2024. He won one title and finished as runner-up in two other tournaments. His record of 44-24 allowed him to finish the year ranked eighth. This saw him qualify for the year-end ATP Finals as a seeded player for the first time. Rune isn’t a strong performer on outdoor hard courts and compiled a 10-10 record on the surface last season.

Max Purcell is an excellent performer on outdoor hard courts and this will have him confident of success here. Of the 52 wins he managed last season, 45 came on the surface. Purcell won three challenger titles in 2023 and finished as runner-up in three other challenger tournaments. He however did finish the year in poor form and won only two of his final 10 games. The Australian lost in the second round in his last Singles tournament which was in Sofia in November. He finished the year ranked 45th but in October, he rose to 40th place for the first time in his career.
